Go Figure..Read and you will see why I HMMM at this one. ******************************************* Sex Sells - Using Sex in Advertising From Nikki Katz, Why do advertisers use slinky women and sex to sell their products? You have to wonder who exactly Carl's Jr. is trying to sell to when they put Paris Hilton in a leather bikini while she washes a Bentley. I don't think the hamburger was in the clip for more than two seconds. Could Carl's Jr. be trying to get ME, a married woman in her early 30's, to purchase their Six Dollar Burger? Doubt it. Could it be my husband that they're targetting? Probably. But who are they really getting to purchase their burgers? But Carl's Jr. is just one of many advertisers who think that sex, or women dancing around in slinky clothing, sells their product. And unfortunately, sometimes it does. And even more unfortunate is the fact these same advertisers are the ones that are causing young girls today to have eating disorders at the age of ten -or- go to their proms in halter-tops and short skirts. It's amazing how much has changed since the days when Marilyn Monroe was the ideal shape and size of a woman. So why do these advertisers use women and sex to sell their product? For the most part it's because the advertisements are created to conform to assumptions about the people who are purchasing the product or viewing the ad (whether it's on TV, in a magazine or on the radio.) The ads might appeal to a specific social class or to a specific sex. These ads are placed in different arenas in the hopes of getting in front of their ideal consumer. For instance, you'll probably never see an ad for power tools in Cosmo magazine and you'll probably never see a tampon commercial during the WWF! Advertisers are also looking for the best way to get your attention. Since you're bombarded with ads everywhere you turn, a lot of advertisers want to get shock value by forcing you to look at what it is their selling. But, back to why women and sex sell products is because these ads are targetted toward men. If you were to put a commercial on TV of a man lounging on the couch with a remote control in his hand and popping open a Bud Light, not many men would find that appealing. But place a sexy woman on the couch with him, drooling over his wet Bud Light bottle and you've got a man ready to jump in the car to go get some beer! Why you ask? Because what the advertiser is selling is that if you go purchase Bud Light, somewhere in that scenario you're going to get a sexy woman. All right, so men aren't that stupid. They know if they run into the local grocery store that they can't pick out their hot babe with their beer, right! But still, the more outlandish, the more sexy, the more skin shown, the more that image will stick in somebody's mind. And their hopes are that the next time somebody goes to purchase a six-pack of beer, that image will still be imbedded somewhere and so that person will just naturally grab their brand of beer. So, is there anything that we can do about it? It depends on how involved you would like to get. One reader, Amanda, says "I consistently write to companies telling them I am unhappy with their adverisements. I often get responses from people who do care that I am unhappy with them. If I get 1000 women to do the same thing, chances are they'll consider cancelling the ad." So if you would like to do something you can boycott the advertisers, write in to let them know that you disapprove, not purchase their products and we can all work to teach our young girls that most women don't look like that. If you find a particular advertisement demeaning or overboard, you can complain about it through the Better Business Bureau in the United States or various other sites in other countries. ******************************************* We are and can be strength in numbers!!!

Ahh, yes sex sells, and I don't know if writing the advertisers is really going to change much because it isn't the advertisers, really, that are the problem, it's an entire society that's built to believe in a certain sexual "ideal" that we'd have to change. I mean, advertisers only choose their advertising strategies based on societal trends - so somehow we have to convince men (and women too) that this is wrong and NEEDS changing. Most women get that, men - well, not so much. So what's the answer? I dunno, but I like the idea of giving the old man a good wallop with a rolled up newspaper when he's drooling over that commercial of that chick eating a hamburger while she rides the electric bull... You know, right on the nose like a bad puppy

I've always regarded people who were driven by marketing schemes as weak minded. I'm one of those people who resents a sales clerk asking me 'if I need any help?' What? Do I look like somebody too stupid to decide if I want what you've got? And God help the waitress/waiter who interrupts a divine indulgence with: "Everything ok? ;D It's like, "get away , can't you see I'm having sex here w/my lobster? But I am old school on these matters and it raises it's ugly head more and more often these days. Advertising hadn't tainted the minds of my elders or peers in the 50's. If you had a crooked tooth, it had to mean something good luck was bestowed on you by the tooth fairies...if you were chubby, my my you were 'big boned'. When I tell my kids about the diversity of appearences back then, they remark: 'y'all must have all looked like a bunch of freaks?' Well, yeah I told them, in a way we did, because we each had to make the best of our physical and financial situations...there was no 'ideal' and there was no rescue for that 'ideal, aspired look'. We didn't call it freaky, we called it character. I cooked for a prestigious, girls' high school for 3 yrs. Not ony anxious to contribute to the nutrition of these fortunate 'up and coming' college bound young women, I was looking forward to getting to know them and hear their take on 'life' in general. On the first day after all the meal related stuff was over, I entered the cafeteria to mingle a bit...it was difficult to remember anything specific about any one of them, cuz they each were blonde, by birth or otherwise, they almost all had on braces, they were dressed in uniforms and even their speach patterns were identical. I was a cook for the 'future barbie doll' society! I'm sure character will emerge from these clairol clones someday. It's just kind of sad they can't get a head start on it like my generation did. perny

Hugz Ruth & welcome to the WSE forum! You are totally correct in your thoughts, men do not respect easy women. In todays world the action of sex has no more meaning to it than a mere hand shake! Sex has no moral reasoning nor does it mean that once you have sex with a person, there should be an emotional bond. Our society has raised children with no understanding of the traditional sexual experience between a man and a women. So where does that leave our world today? It leaves it uncaring and very unemotional. We can only change what we can control in our little corners of this world, so lets start there. Lets continue our battles in protecting and educating our young to respect the sexual experience between a man and a women. Lets keep the,"old fashion", ways of our upbringings fresh in their minds so that they too can appreciate and embrace the sensation and experience of a respected sexual action between partners. Lets control what is being delivered into our homes through media. Lets chose to make a statement through our strong hold on our sentimental and traditional values of life between men and women! Yes sex sells, but so does self-respect and admiration for ones morals! Huggzzzzz ~D~

There is alot of women who act that way everytime a man comes near. I have saw some women just get a kick out of doing it especially to a married man. They will act a fool just for attention. It's like a quest to see if he will choose her over his wife. Well, in my eyes its no reward to win a cheating husband and the only gift these women get is a few moments of pleasure with many men where we good women get a lifetime of LOVE with 1 good man.

in reply to redneckwoman34 You are lucky to have a lifetime of 1 good man, many women who you say are given a gift of a few moments of pleasure with many men and you GOOD women get a lifetime of LOVE of 1 good man, to have that speacial person has nothing to do with being a good woman every girl and woman deserves to be LOVED unconditionally which is a RIGHT not a GIFT or REWARD anda but unfortunaltly not all women or young girls have that luxury or the tools you have to respect themselves because they have never been taught or treated with the respect they deserve, therefore understanding compassion education and empathy should be given rather than ridicule, and judgement. As young girls and women education is the key to eradicate blame and build self esteem so these so called bad women think that is what they deserve or maybe its a case of these relationships are in there control non commited ones arms length not to close cause thats when they get hurt!! it takes two so are the men gifts? Are these women Bad?

You know, the "sex" in advertising drives me nuts. I know there are also alot of commercials geared towards women as well.
It helps me to talk back to the commercials. It's gotten to the point that my husband turns the tv off during commercials just so he doesn't have to hear the argument. This also suits me fine. You would think that these advertisers would have more respect for women. Of course, we can't expect them to respect "us" until the majority of "us" respect ourselves.

Huggz Holly I agree and unfortunately the marketeers are not about personal feelings. They are anti-personal and their only target is their profit margin. They are no better than drug dealers or pimps that use people to gain in their profit margin. When did people become so expendable? Or was there ever a time when we were not expendable. It is just more up-close and personal due to man's advancements in technology that has put everything at our fingertips. This fact that women have to feel harassed, violated even humiliated when a television commercial comes on is a serious matter. Immediately if women make a derogatory remark in their own defense...they are labeled with insecurities. I use to think it was self-respect more than anything. Where oh where has the innocence and moral thinking of our world gone? ? Huggz~D~

What really hurts is the fact that even women's products are advertised in the same way. Victoria's Secret commercials are the worst. At least some of the cosmetic ads are improving. I applaud them for using women like Queen Latifah in their ads. Why can't all companies use real women as sexy images in ads if they want to use sex to sell their products?

I agree that things are slowly changing in a positive direction in regards to hiring 'normal' looking women for their advertising. Unfortunately there are actually women out there that want too see these dream beauties because they believe they will eventually look like then if they buy into the product being advertised.
Itis also those women that are adding to the demand for this type of unrealistic advertising. So we not only have to convince the corporations...we also have to convince the blind/gullible women of the world to stop this destructing way of advertising.
