I have no idea which board to put this under but this has been making my brain curious...
So, in light of the recession and having to cut back on shopping and whatnot, and since shopping is one of those self esteem "pick-me-ups" what other options are there?
Think about it...

Hi sugar, If you are already at a good point in your life then keep on going. You could share some of your knowledge and experiences with those who are not at that point. You could volunteer at most anything. You could try something new. You will laugh but "back in the day" shopping and spending money was more of a necessity than a "pick me up"! You are a brilliant young woman. Spread the wealth! Love, Val

Val, you have TOTALLY missed my point. What I meant was, the usual thing for a woman to do to feel good about herself is go out and shop for clothes or go get her hair done but unfortunately that costs. I was asking for other options as a more general question.
On a personal note, Val, how many times have I told you I don't help people, I entertain people.

Perhaps I did miss your point. My point is that it is time that we as a country re-evaluate our values. The value of a woman is not in shopping and spending of money. The value of any human is within themselves. Over the past 30 years that I am personally aware of the rate of indulgence has become overwhelming and yet the level of personal happiness and happiness in general has declined. Thus my reply to your question. Spread the wealth. Find something (perhaps a cause) that you and enjoy and that will make a difference. What can it hurt to try? Love & Blessings, Val

Answer: These are choices...not necessarily what fits anyone in particular.
-volunteers are always needed everywhere -start a new exercise program & make your old one even more challenging) -write a book -join clubs (not bars) -check your local newspaper for what is going on in your area -learn photography -start blogging( That takes up many hours of ones time)
I am pulling these out of my hat. So if anyone else has any points of action..please let me know:)

OK you know what? That's what I get for asking a general question. D, I wasn't asking for some sort of less-personalized answer. Can we just re-edit this post for other people?
Maybe it is a generational thing. Good for your daughter for doing the old movie thing, I love buying 5 dollar dvds BUT you can only do it for so long since movies are generally unhealthy for a person's love life. And there is no need to get philosophical, either of you, I'm just asking a straight to-the-point question.
I'm surprised you'd even mention volunteering for PEOPLE, you know me well enough. I volunteer for ART. I should be getting an email this week about volunteering for the Arts Festival this weekend. I love shopping for cheap I found this ridiculously cute plaid skirt at a second-hand store for 8 dollars. But really, there is NOTHING to do around here except shopping or spending money (luckily for me I have my 13th free iced coffee coupon...) With every great public event there is food to get while listening to the concert; now how can you deny that exactly? God knows I always want to buy something at Pride every year as a memento.
OT: You want a good feminist good-intention magazine? Read BUST, it has done wonders for my self esteem. It's made me more political.

Your volunteer job at the Art festival may open more avenues for you. You will make friends.. and you can make something to trade at Pride for a memento . You are very intelligent . You have many interests. Follow some of your interest on the Internet. Go out and get involved with Nature. Plant a flower. Write your ideas about the clouds above you. (Just a thought) .

I stay very busy regardless of the fact that I don't have much money to spend.
I love to spend the day at the beach. (It's free and you can pack a lunch)
Hiking (also free)
Enjoying nature (free)
I like to go to yard sales. (I think it is interesting to see what odds and ends others put on display)
When I haven't had the money to spend on refreshments on the free outdoor concerts that they put on, I bring a sandwich and soda from home.
All these things make me feel better about myself because I enjoy them.---get me out of the funk if you will.
