Ever had one? If you have, then I bet you can relate to how they made me feel. I would let a doctor cut my head off if it would make them go away! I want to share what I've learned about them hopefully to spare anyone the mental and physical anquish they caused me.
First the symptoms: Rapid heart beat and rapid respirations/ onset non selective/day or night/ during fun or stressful times. Numbness tingling of hands and feet. Feelings of intense Fear. Duration: 1 min to hours at a time.
The Term: Panic Attack is misleading. It defines the symptoms of the attack and implies a psychological condition. Years ago it was called: The Vapors. While the condition affects males and females alike, it tends to affect females at a higher rate particularly during childbirthing ages. Sadly, many women are treated from a psychological diagnosis when it is a physical condition caused by the Thyroid. Over the years, Women have sought conselling, been medicated for depression,(oh yeah, it will make you depressed) even institutionalized for this condition. At any rate, the attacks will stop you in your tracks, and leave you physically exhausted and your self esteem hits the floor. It will produce what I call 'Rational phobias' for ex. I was afraid to drive, esp with the kids in the car for fear it would happen while I was driving.
Here's why: The thyroid produces a hormone I can not spell! sry When working properly, that hormone is secreted during 'fight or flight' survival times (our ancient imbibed survival weapon) Oh I bet it made the cave the women run fast! ;D I could be sitting at my kitchen table and feel like I was running the Boston Marathon all by myself...or more like it...like I was standing in front of a firing squad!
Anyway when not working properly, the thyroid will fire this hormone into the blood stream 'at will' causing the attacks. It is very easily treated by an internist, pref..an endo doc. I sure hope this helps somebody's self esteem. love perny
